What Is GSM, Really?
You’ve probably seen it in product descriptions: “180gsm cotton”, “210gsm pique”, “heavyweight tee”. GSM sounds technical, but it quietly decides whether your T‑shirt feels cheap and flimsy or solid and dependable.
GSM stands for “grams per square metre”. It’s simply a measure of fabric weight. Higher GSM usually means a thicker, denser fabric; lower GSM usually means lighter, airier fabric. Neither is automatically better—it’s about choosing the right weight for how and where you’ll wear it.
Light, Mid and Heavy — How They Feel
-
Lightweight (around 140–160gsm):
Great for very hot climates and layering, but can sometimes feel see‑through, twist after washing, or cling in ways you don’t want. -
Midweight (around 170–190gsm):
This is the sweet spot for most everyday tees. Enough structure to drape cleanly and hide what you want hidden, but still breathable. A 180gsm cotton tee, for example, tends to feel substantial without being bulky. -
Heavyweight (200gsm+):
Feels structured, almost like a light sweatshirt. Ideal if you want a boxier silhouette or live in cooler weather. Too heavy in the wrong climate can feel suffocating.
GSM and Real‑World Use
Weight isn’t just theory—you feel it in motion and over time. A midweight tee will usually:
- Hold its shape better across the shoulders and neckline
- Sit more cleanly across the torso (less clinging, less twisting)
- Age more gracefully, especially if it’s pre‑shrunk and properly constructed
Heavier pique fabrics around 210gsm, like those used in good polos, give you that “put‑together” feel without needing a formal shirt. You can sit, move, travel and wash without the collar collapsing or the fabric thinning out in a season.
How to Choose the Right GSM for You
Ask yourself three quick questions:
-
Where do I live and move?
Hotter climate or active days? Aim for the midweight range so you don’t feel trapped in your clothes. -
How do I want it to drape?
If you prefer a clean, slightly structured silhouette rather than a clingy fit, look for midweight to light‑heavyweight fabrics. -
How often do I want to rebuy?
Cheaper, low‑GSM tees often seem like a bargain until they twist, fade or shrink. Paying a little more for a carefully chosen GSM and pre‑shrunk fabric usually means buying less often.
The Quiet Detail That Changes Everything
GSM will never be the loudest detail on a hang tag—but it’s one of the most important. SOLOS tees use carefully selected weights and pre‑shrunk organic cotton to feel calm on the body and consistent in the wash, so you don’t have to think about them. You just put them on and get on with your day.
